Documentation:
You must take the passport with a validity of at least 6 months from the start date to the trip. The visa is processed at the airport of entry to Egypt for a fee of 25 dollars.
Coin:
The unit is the Egyptian pound that is divided into 100 piasters. The banknotes that are in circulation are the following: banknotes in pounds: 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 banknotes in piasters: 50, 25.The euro and dollar are accepted in many stores with a change currency. We will not have any problem to move in banks, hotels and exchange houses. The credit cards are accepted in hotels and shops, although they do not admit it in the most cruises on the Nile.
Dress:
The clothes have to be comfortable. In summer it is advisable to wear cotton clothes and light colors. Neither can we forget the sunglasses and a hat or cap. It is recommended that the girls do not wear T-shirts very low, for that from wherever you go do what you see. No problem if they wear suspenders but do not forget to wear a scarf to cover the shoulders to enter the mosques. With the pants the same. They are very comfortable that consist of two pieces, the so-called "detachable", and which become a shorts unbuttoning the zipper of the leg. Pieces can be stored in the backpack and used when needed. These tips are the same for both boys and girls. It is not well seen to see a gentleman with shorts in a mosque, for example, although everyone does. In summer it can refresh quite at night so it is best to include a jacket in your luggage. In winter we will wear the same clothes that we would wear in Spain. The footwear must be very comfortable and closed (boots, sneakers) with cotton socks especially to visit the temples, necropolis, etc. ... For the boat or the city we can carry any type of shoe.
Gastronomy:
In an organized trip we will never have problem with the type of food. The cuisine of the hotels or the boats is quite European with some Egyptian touch. But very affordable even for the palates that are reluctant to this type of food. Water is drinkable but it is always advisable to drink bottled water. We must always carry a bottle of water in the backpack and drink very often, especially in summer to avoid dehydration. As a Muslim country alcoholic beverages are only found in hotels, some restaurants and premises with special permission.
Vaccines and medications:
You do not need any type of vaccine to travel to Egypt. With respect to medicines, it is advisable to take something for the diarrhea that is most frequent. Fort sec is the most popular, but there are others in the market just as effective and certainly cheaper. In Egypt there are abundant pharmacies with very cheap medicines where we can buy something of urgency.
Photography:
Less in the museums, it is possible to take photographs in all the sites of the visits. In the Valley of the Kings or in the rest of the country necrópolis (Giza, Sakkara, Thebes, etc.) you can not take photos inside any tomb. In the exteriors yes. In the Valley of the Kings do not let in the video camera, the photo, yes, but to make the exteriors of the tombs. It is strongly reminded that the flash never be used inside monuments. For more details, see the bases of the Take care of Egypt project.
Bargaining:
For some it is an art and for others a real suffering. In much of the tourist shops it is customary to haggle the price, being able to lower to less than half the first price offered by the seller.
Tips:
Calls "baksheesh", none is obligatory but deep down it is, most people live exclusively from them. In restaurants, 10% of the total account is usually left. Other tips are common to chauffeurs, porters, waiters, crew on cruises, guides, etc. ...
Taxis:
When you take a taxi that does not carry a meter (the black ones), it is recommended to agree the price of the race before getting on and carrying the exact money. Taxis from hotels and tourist sites are usually more expensive but usually drivers speak English.
Security:
Contrary to popular opinion, Egypt is a very safe country. Respect for the foreigner is very great. On our trip surely we only visit tourist places where the problems are nonexistent. In any case, if we go into areas that are not frequented by foreigners such as the metro, neighborhoods away from tourist areas, etc. We are not going to have any more problems. People will look at us with curiosity but will be kind and will offer to help us if we have the slightest problem.
